‘Overweight and lazy’ – ex-Derby manager Clement lays into Bent

Former Derby County – and current Reading – manager Paul Clement says that Darren Bent was “overweight and lazy”.

Bent appeared as part of Sky Sports’ coverage on Reading’s opening game of the season against Derby, having played under Clement at Derby.

Bent was released at the end of last season and has still not found a new club for the season.

“It was inevitable he [Clement] was going to crumble at Derby,” Bent said.

“Training had changed and his philosophy from pre-season had gone out the window because we weren’t getting the right results.

“And ultimately he didn’t really like confrontation.”

But Clement took to Twitter to answer those claims.

‘I sense some bitterness here, which is normal if a player does not play much,’ he tweeted.

‘It is never a difficult decision to leave out a player who is over weight and lazy.’
