Ince: ‘Man Utd way’ mindset must end – Rangnick facing ‘poisoned chalice’
Paul Ince has called for the “Manchester United way” mindset to end and he also suggested that their manager’s job can be a “poisoned chalice”.
The Red Devils have made a poor start to the 2021/22 campaign. A run of defeats against the likes of Liverpool, Man City and Watford led to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure.
The club legend has since been replaced by Ralf Rangnick, who has been announced as their new interim boss.
Man United v Arsenal: The great rivalry is relevant once more
Michael Carrick will be in charge on Thursday evening as United host Arsenal at Old Trafford.
A win for Man Utd could move them as high as sixth in the Premier League. They will be three points adrift of the Champions League places if they beat the Gunners.
Rangnick will remain in charge until the summer. At that point, he will take up a consultancy position and he will aid the club’s new permanent boss.
As reported by the Mirror, Ince has suggested that Rangnick needs to “change the whole philosophy” at United:
“Changing the mindset of the club, how it runs, how it functions. Having input over the development, recruitment, coaching staff and styles.
“The club have to allow [Rangnick] to have complete control to take this club where it needs to get to.
“None of this ‘play the Man United way,’ that we hear all the time. The Man United way from the 90s was years back and we haven’t got the players to do that.
“[Rangnick] will have to change the whole philosophy of the club. It’s a tough job for him, it really is.
“Managing Man United, it’s the greatest job in the world if you can get it right, but it can also be a poisoned chalice. After Fergie, we’ve had four managers in eight years.
“Whatever manager they get in the future, Ralf has to lay the foundations. He has to make all the decisions.”
Back in September, Ince claimed that United made a mistake not signing Declan Rice during the summer:
“David Moyes didn’t get long enough at all [at Manchester United ] and what he’s showing is what a very good manager that he is. He’s got West Ham up and playing,” Ince said.
“They play a different style and you know what you’re going to get with West Ham. They defend deep, they get back in their shape and they play from there.
“With (Michail) Antonio not playing, it might dilute them a bit as far as that’s concerned. But midfield, Declan Rice I thought was outstanding in the Euros. He looks like he’s stepped up a gear, gone up another gear this year. He’s been brilliant in midfield.
“There was rumours we were going to try and sign him at Manchester United and he’d have been perfect.”
