Arsenal target Alexis Mac Allister celebrates scoring a goal

Emmanuel Petit has advised Arsenal to put in a bid for Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister in the January transfer window.

The Argentina international signed for the Seagulls in January 2019 from Argentinos Juniors before going back on loan for the season at the Argentinian club.

He spent a spell at Boca Juniors the following season before making his mark for Brighton in the Premier League in the second half of the 2019-20 campaign.

And Mac Allister has really come to the fore this season with four goals in the opening six Premier League matches of the campaign for Brighton.

Arsenal were looked to bring in another midfielder ahead of the January transfer deadline but eventually settled for what they’ve got.

Brazil international Arthur Melo – who eventually moved to Liverpool on deadline day – has been heavily linked to Arsenal over the last few transfer windows but there was little hint that he was ever close to moving the Emirates Stadium.

However, Petit has said it “isn’t a big miss” for the Gunners to not sign Arthur with the former France international hoping to see Arsenal bid for Mac Allister in January.

“Not signing Arthur Melo isn’t a big miss for Arsenal. But I know they were looking for that link between the midfield and striker,” Petit told Lord Ping.

“If I were [Arsenal technical director] Edu, I’d make an offer for Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton – I really like him.”

Arsenal have had a good start to the new Premier League season after winning five of their opening six matches with the weekend’s 3-1 loss at Manchester United their first of the campaign.

Petit added: “Right now, Arsenal are first in the league so I would say they are genuine title contenders.

“They have improved over the last few seasons, but they still need to improve against the top teams. They need to learn to convincingly beat top teams.

“We’re seeing things in this Arsenal squad that we haven’t seen before. Maturity, character and personality and so for them to be able to beat the best teams in the division is the last stop for Arsenal.”

Arsenal got their Europa League campaign off to a good start last night too with a 2-1 victory over FC Zurich and Petit thinks the competition will be taken “very seriously” by Mikel Arteta this term.

Petit continued: “Arsenal know that the Europa League is very important for them because the winner qualifies for the Champions League.

“I think Arsenal will take the competition very seriously and I’m pretty sure that both Arsenal and Man United will reach the semi-finals.

“If they both meet in the final [of the Europa League], I’m a Gooner so I back Arsenal to win. Since Mikel Arteta came to the club they have improved a lot and I have been very impressed.”
