Mauricio Pochettino says that he persuaded Fernando Llorente to choose Tottenham over Chelsea by explaining his “philosophy” and “project” to him.
Llorente had the choice of both London clubs this summer when it became apparent that Swansea were willing to sell.
Both Spurs and Chelsea offered £15million, but Llorente chose the Premier League runners-up over the champions.
The striker explained that a “last-minute” phone call from Pochettino helped him make his decision, and the manager discussed what he said to the player on Friday.
“I think like always, we explained our philosophy and project for the future, what we expect from him and need from him,” he said.
“It was a very good conversation with him, a private conversation.
“I think we talked about the project, the future and what we expect from him.
“We never talked about playing more or less. It was more about the project and having the possibility to join us, and he was so excited with our offer.
“He is an experienced player, a World Cup winner. He knows very well that after you need to deserve and show your quality to have the possibility to play.”
