Everybody’s favourite Duncan Castles claims that Mauricio Pochettino could leave Tottenham for Real Madrid this summer.
Writing for Yahoo Sport, Castles claims that Florentino Perez has Pochettino as his preferred candidate to replace Zinedine Zidane, who could leave even if Real Madrid win the Champions League.
Pochettino has managed in Spain at Espanyol, and has long been rumoured with a move to Madrid. Defeat in the FA Cup semi-final led to Pochettino discussing life at Tottenham without him for the first time, although departing this summer would still be a surprise.
‘Pochettino is known for taking a long-term, relatively low-risk approach to his career, stepping back from interest from Manchester United in 2016 as he was conscious of the scale of the task involved in rebuilding one of the world’s two largest football clubs,’ Castles writes.
It’s interesting that he would report United interest in Pochettino at the same time that Jose Mourinho got the job, thus implying that Mourinho was not first choice for the role.
Whether this is true or not, there are suspicions that Pochettino would like more funds to be made available for transfers and wages if he is to be expected to keep Tottenham in the top four amid some serious competition.
