Pochettino wants Chelsea job

Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly ‘told friends’ that he would love to manage Chelsea and Todd Boehly is becoming ‘increasingly alarmed’ by Graham Potter.

The Argentinian has been out of work since he left PSG at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Pochettino departed the club after he was unable to help them win the Champions League. Under him, they reached the semi-finals and round of 16 before being knocked out by Man City and Real Madrid respectively.

The 50-year-old has a strong affinity with English football as he has previously had superb spells at Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.

He has been linked with several English clubs over the past year. Man Utd reportedly considered him before they appointed Erik ten Hag and he was also linked with Aston Villa before they replaced Steven Gerrard with Unai Emery.

Pochettino reportedly decided against joining Aston Villa as he ‘feared’ the club’s players were ‘not suited’ to his preferred style of play.

Chelsea have already changed their manager once this season as Thomas Tuchel was sacked and replaced by former Brighton boss Graham Potter.

The Englishman enjoyed a promising start to life at Stamford Bridge but they were without a win in five Premier League games before the World Cup break.

During this run, they have been beaten by Newcastle United, Arsenal and Brighton. Man City have also knocked them out of the Carabao Cup.

Football Insider are now reporting that Potter ‘is not under immediate threat’ but the World Cup ‘came at an opportune time’ for him.

It is suggested that the club’s co-owner – Boehly – is ‘becoming increasingly alarmed’ by their poor run of results.

Potter’s position ‘will come under threat’ if there is not a ‘considerable improvement’ at Chelsea after the new year.

As for Pochettino, he has ‘told friends that he is keen on Chelsea’s manager’s job’. He is ‘interested’ and is ‘pushing for the job behind the scenes’.

Speaking last month, Pochettino admitted that he is “missing” management.

“I am still so young!” Pochettino said on the BBC.

“After Paris, we decide to wait until after the World Cup. Paris was a tough experience, a great experience, but tough, and you need to process every single thing (when making a decision).”

He added: “I have a lot of respect for professionals and it’s hard for me to sell myself, that’s work for you. That routine that is generated when you are at work is created as a result of the adrenaline of day to day. You miss it.

“Now what we do is get together, zoom, eat with the family and talk about the great debates that we generate. That is missed. But at the same time we do things that when you are immersed in the battle of work we cannot do. Being with family heals a lot.”
