Pochettino urges Spurs ‘respect’ for Adebayor

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino rather naively expects the club’s fans to “give a good welcome” to Emmanuel Adebayor on his return to White Hart Lane on Sunday.

The former Arsenal striker has pledged to celebrate if he scores against his old club in Crystal Palace colours, six months after finally leaving Tottenham.

Adebayor scored 42 goals in 113 appearances for Tottenham but many fans are bitter about his protracted exit, with Spurs still paying his wages after his exit.

But Pochettino said ahead of the FA Cup clash between the two clubs: “I think we need to show respect and make sure our fans help the team go through to the next round. This is our challenge.

“We spent one year together and he showed respect to us.

“I think our fans will give a good welcome to Ade because he played for Tottenham. He scored a lot of goals for Tottenham. Sometimes in football you have a good or bad period.

“The last season for him was a very difficult one. He had a lot of personal problems but I was always available to speak with him and the relationship was fantastic.”
