Postecoglou told three players aren’t ‘good enough’ as pundit blasts Tottenham for Carabao Cup loss
Tottenham bowed out of the Carabao Cup at the first time of asking and Craig Burley has pointed the finger at three players in particular.
Ange Postecoglou has had a positive start to life in North London so far as Spurs have looked good in their opening Premier League matches.
However, the Australian boss oversaw his first defeat as Tottenham boss in midweek as his side lost on penalties to Fulham.
Postecoglou made plenty of changes for the midweek fixture and Burley thinks that this highlighted their lack of squad depth.
“This Tottenham squad isn’t deep enough or good enough,” Burley told ESPN. “You look at that midfield. Hojbjerg, Skipp and Lo Celso. That’s only going to get you the sack, eventually.
“It just shows you. If something were to happen to Bissouma and Sarr, of course, Bentacur is to come back, who is a good footballer, at least that’s a better quality of player.
“But what came in tonight really isn’t going to cut the mustard. If he doesn’t get them out and get better players in, if it won’t be in this transfer window, then it’s going to be tougher for him.”
Tottenham are still looking to land a deal or two before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the week.
Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson remains a top target and they are also exploring a deal to take Barcelona’s Ansu Fati on loan.
Postecoglou defended his decision to make nine changes against Fulham as the Tottenham boss wanted to learn more about his squad.
“How am I going to find out my players? We need to give the players the opportunity to contribute,” Postecoglou told reporters.
“We weren’t at our fluent best, particular early on and not surprising given changes I made. Many different ways you grow as a team and we showed real character to hang in.
“Second half we had our moments to win it and we lose on penalties so you have to wear it.”
Tottenham will be looking to bounce back against Burnley at the weekend as they travel to Turf Moor looking for their third win of the season.
