Brighton boss Graham Potter has admitted his side weren’t good enough as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Liverpool.

A first-half header from Luis Diaz and a Mohamed Salah penalty on the hour mark gave Liverpool the three points and saw Brighton succumb to their fifth Premier League defeat in a row.

Chelsea shame, government blame and Benzema versus Kane

Speaking to BT Sport after the defeat, Potter said: “We started really well, we were the better team on the front foot. The goal took the wind out of our sails a little bit, especially with the run we’re on and them being Liverpool. Credit to the boys they stuck in there.

“1-0 at half-time we’re still in the game. In the second half a couple of things didn’t go our way with the penalty.

“We had chances to press and unsettle them, our response throughout the game was great, I thought we finished the game really well. I think against a team as strong as Liverpool we were not good enough.”

Much was made of the VAR decision not to send off Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez when he clattered into Diaz as the Colombian opened the scoring.

However, Potter admitted he thought it was accidental, despite not seeing the incident back again.

“I have not seen it back, I think it was an accident. The quality of the run and pass beat him.

“It’s not a happy camp when you lose, but we just need to focus on the next game. The Premier League can be difficult. The recency of results is the lens you look at. Rightly so, but we need to do better.

“We need to get to the points tally we want, and the only way we can do that is to focus on the next game.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp praised Diaz for his bravery in the goal, and admitted he was also unsure if he player should have been sent off.

“He did what a striker had to do. I didn’t see it back but it was spectacular enough in the first moment. To get in there with his head it was really brave. A great goal.

“I have no idea, I saw it only once.”
