Predicting every Premier League club’s final squad lists

Date published: Monday 12th August 2019 8:30

As we all know, Premier League clubs must submit a squad list for the upcoming season at the end of this month. They can fill up to 25 spaces, of which a maximum of 17 can be non-homegrown players (NHG). The rest must be made up of homegrown (HG) players (any player who was registered to an English or Welsh FA affiliated club for at least three years before they turned 21).

So a club could theoretically name a 17-man squad comprised entirely of NHG players, a 25-man squad comprised of 17 NHG and eight HG players, or any combination that sees no more than 17 NHG players included.

Clubs can also name as many U21 players as they want. To be eligible this year, they must have been born on or after January 1, 1998.

ARSENAL

NHG (17) Aubameyang, Ceballos, Elneny, Kolasinac, Lacazette, Leno, Luiz, Mavropanos, Mkhitaryan, Monreal, Mustafi, Ozil, Pepe, Sokratis, Tierney, Torreira, Xhaka

HG (6) Bellerin, Chambers, Holding, Macey, Maitland-Niles, Martinez

Notable U21s: Guendouzi, Martinelli, Nelson, Smith Rowe, Willock

Well done, Arsenal. Pats on the back. And that is even without Mo Elneny and Shkodran Mustafi, neither of whom made the bench on the opening weekend, being shifted on.

ASTON VILLA

NHG (12) El Ghazi, Engels, Elmohamady, Guilbert, Jota, Kalinic, Kodjia, McGinn, Nakamba, Nyland, Trezeguet, Wesley

HG (12) Chester, Grealish, Hause, Heaton, Hourihane, Konsa, Lansbury, Mings, Steer, Targett, Taylor, Tshibola

Notable U21s: Davis, Luiz

A series of loans – Scott Hogan and James Bree among them – have taken Aston Villa below the 25-man threshold.

BOURNEMOUTH

NHG (5) Boruc, Danjuma, Fraser, Lerma, Rico

HG (21) Ake, Begovic, Billing, Brooks, Butcher, L. Cook, S. Cook, Daniels, Francis, Gosling, Ibe, Kelly, King, Mepham, Simpson, Smith, Solanke, Stacey, Stanislas, Surman, Wilson

Notable U21s: Ramsdale, Travers, Taylor

We’re not sure even Matt Butcher will notice when he is omitted from Bournemouth’s Premier League squad.

BRIGHTON

NHG (17) Ahannach, Andone, Balogun, Bernardo, Bissouma, Bong, Gross, Hemed, Izquierdo, Jahanbakhsh, Locadia, Maupay, Montoya, Propper, Ryan, Schelotto, Trossard

HG (10) Burn, Button, Duffy, Dunk, March, Mooy, Murray, Steele, Stephens, Webster

Notable U21s: Baluta

Beram Kayal, Markus Suttner and Percy Tau have all left but Brighton still have too many damned players. Soufyan Ahannach and Ezequiel Scheletto have got to be the favourites to go next.

BURNLEY

NHG (4) Defour, Gudmundsson, Pieters, Vydra

HG (21) Bardsley, Barnes, Brady, Cork, Drinkwater, Dunne, Gibson, Hart, Hendrick, Legzdins, Lennon, Long, Lowton, Mee, Peacock-Farrell, Pope, Rodriguez, Tarkowski, Taylor, Westwood, Wood

Notable U21s: Driscoll-Glennon, McNeil

Brexit Burnley are just fine. It’s almost beautiful.

CHELSEA

NHG (20) Alonso, Bakayoko, Batshuayi, Kepa, Azpilicueta, Caballero, Giroud, Jorginho, Kante, Kenedy, Kovacic, Palmieri, Pantic, Pedro, Rahman, Rudiger, Willian, Van Ginkel, Zappacosta, Zouma

HG (8) Abraham, Barkley, Blackman, Christensen, Hector, Loftus-Cheek, Piazon, Tomori

Notable U21s: Hudson-Odoi, Mount, Pulisic

Chelsea have basically got to lose three of those players. Our money is on Lucas Piazon, Baba Rahman and Marco van Ginkel. What a world we live in.

CRYSTAL PALACE

NHG (11) Ayew, Benteke, Camarasa, Guaita, Kouyate, McArthur, McCarthy, Meyer, Milivojevic, Riedewald, Sakho

HG (14) Cahill, Dann, Henderson, Hennessey, Henry, Inniss, Kelly, Schlupp, Tomkins, Townsend, Van Aanholt, Ward, Wickham, Zaha

Notable U21s Woods

Perfect. Apart from the fact that they are in a gentle downward spiral.

EVERTON

NHG (14) Bernard, Coleman, Gbamin, Digne, Gomes, Lossl, Martina, Mina, Mirallas, Niasse, Richarlison, Sidibe, Stekelenburg, Tosun

HG (12) Baines, Bolasie, Calvert-Lewin, Delph, Holgate, Iwobi, Kean, Keane, Pickford, Schneiderlin, Sigurdsson, Walcott

Notable U21s Gibson, Davies

That’s too many players, Marco. So we can expect to see exits for Cuco MartinaYannick Bolasie and probably Kevin Mirallas too.

LEICESTER

NHG (17) Amartey, Benkovic, Diabate, Fuchs, Ghezzal, Iheanacho, Jakupovic, Kapustka, Mendy, Ndidi, Pereira, Perez, Praet, Silva, Slimani, Soyuncu, Tielemans

HG (14) Albrighton, Barnes, Chilwell, Choudhury, Evans, Gray, James, King, Maddison, Morgan, Schmeichel, Thomas, Vardy, Ward

Notable U21s: Justin, Leshabela

Eesh. There’s some trimming to do there. Six must go/miss out so we predict Fousseni Diabate, Bartosz Kapustka, Islam Slimani, Adrien Silva, Matty James and Andy King.

LIVERPOOL

NHG (13) Alisson, Fabinho, Firmino, Keita, Lovren, Mane, Matip, Origi, Robertson, Salah, Shaqiri, Van Dijk, Wijnaldum

HG (7) Clyne, Gomez, Henderson, Kent, Lallana, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain

Notable U21s: Alexander-Arnold, Brewster, Elliott, Hoever, Jones, Kelleher, Van den Berg

That’s not a lot of players.

MANCHESTER CITY

NHG (17) Aguero, Bravo, Cancelo, De Bruyne, Ederson, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Jesus, Laporte, Mahrez, Mendy, Otamendi, Rodri, Sane, B. Silva, D. Silva, Zinchenko

HG (6) Angelino, Carson, Garcia, Sterling, Stones, Walker

Notable U21s Foden, Grimshaw, Meshino

They’re pretty much sorted, aren’t they?

MANCHESTER UNITED

NHG (11) Bailly, Darmian, De Gea, Fred, Lindelof, Martial, Mata, Matic, Rojo, Romero, Sanchez

HG (15) Borthwick-Jackson, Grant, James, Jones, Lingard, Maguire, McTominay, A. Pereira, Pogba, Rashford, Shaw, Smalling, Tuanzebe, Wan-Bissaka, Young

Notable U21s Chong, Dalot, Fosu-Mensah, Garner, Gomes, Greenwood

Sound the ‘too many players’ klaxon. Well Cameron Borthwick-Jackson can still move to League One on loan, while somebody somewhere will surely take Matteo Darmian or Marcos Rojo on loan? Surely?

NEWCASTLE

NHG (16) Almiron, Atsu, Dubravka, Fernandez, Ki, Krafth, Joelinton, Lazaar, Lejeune, Manquillo, Maximin, Muto, Saivet, Schar, Willems, Yedlin

HG (14) Aarons, Carroll, Clark, Colback, Darlow, Dummett, Elliot, Gayle, Hayden, Lascelles, Longstaff (S), Ritchie, Shelvey, Sterry.

Notable U21s Longstaff (M)

Newcastle have already announced their squad and confirmed that Jack Colback, Achraf Lazaar, Rolando Aarons, Henri Saivet and Jamie Sterry have missed out.

NORWICH

NHG (17) AmadouBuendia, Drmic, Fahrmann, Heise, Hernandez, Klose, Leitner, McGovern, McLean, Pukki, Srbeny, Stiepermann, Tettey, Trybull, Vrancic, Zimmermann

HG (5) Byram, Hanley, Krul, Roberts, Thompson

Notable U21s: Aarons, Cantwell, Godfrey, Idah, Lewis, Oxborough

Norwich have an awful lot of players we absolutely could not pick out of a line-up. But they do not have too many players, which is crucial here.

SHEFFIELD UNITED

NHG (5) BesicFleck, Stevens, Mousset, Verrips.

HG (25) Baldock, Basham, Bryan, Carruthers, Clarke, Egan, Evans, K. Freeman, L. Freeman, Henderson, Heneghan, Holmes, Jagielka, Lundstram, McBurnie, McGoldrick, Morrison, Moore, Norwood, O’Connell, Osborn, Robinson, Sharp, Stearman, Wright

Sheffield United have a whole wealth of players who will not be named in their Premier League squad. We’re guessing Ben Heneghan, Jake Wright, Samir Carruthers, Leon Clarke and Ricky Holmes might be the ones to get the chop.

SOUTHAMPTON

NHG (13) Armstrong, Bednarek, Boufal, Carillo, Cedric, Danso, Elyounoussi, Hoedt, Hojbjerg, Lemina, Romeu, Vestergaard, Yoshida

HG (14) Adams, Barnes, Bertrand, Forster, Gunn, Hesketh, Ings, Lewis, Long, McCarthy, McQueen, Redmond, Stephens, Ward-Prowse

Notable U21s: Djenepo, Obafemi, Ramsay, Slattery, Valery

You would be very surprised if Wesley Hoedt was at Southampton beyond August. And very, very surprised if Southampton used a squad space on Marcus Barnes.

TOTTENHAM

NHG (16) Alderweireld, Aurier, Dier, Eriksen, Gazzaniga, Lamela, Lloris, Lo Celso, Moura, Ndombele, Nkoudou, Sanchez, Sissoko, Son, Vertonghen, Wanyama

HG (6) Alli, Davies, Kane, Rose, Walker-Peters, Winks

Notable U21s: Foyth, Sessegnon, Skipp

Not a massive squad but small can be beautiful.

WATFORD

NHG (17) Capoue, Deulofeu, Doucoure, Femenia, Foulquier, Gomes, Holebas, Janmaat, Kabasele, Masina, Okaka, Penaranda, Pereyra, Prodl, Sema, Success, Zeegelaar

HG (11) Bachmann, Cathcart, Chalobah, Cleverley, Dawson, Deeney, Foster, Gray, Hughes, Mariappa, Welbeck.

Notable U21s: Dahlberg, Dele-Bashiru, Hernandez, Quina, Sarr, Stuparevic.

We’re pretty sure some of these players do not exist. And we’re pretty sure Marvin Zeegelaar, Cucho Hernandez and Stefano Okaka will not play for Watford this season.

WEST HAM

NHG (17) Ajeti, Anderson, Balbuena, Diop, Fabianski, Fornals, Haller, Hernandez, Lanzini, Masuaku, Ogbonna, Reid, Roberto, Sanchez, Snodgrass, Yarmolenko, Zabaleta

HG (6) Antonio, Cresswell, Fredericks, Martin, Noble, Wilshere

Notable U21s: Cardoso, Rice

They are good to go.

WOLVES

NHG (16) Boly, Bonatini, Cutrone, Dendoncker, Jimenez, Jonny, Jota, Moutinho, Ofosu-Ayeh, Neves, Roderick, Rui Patricio, Saiss, Traore, Vallejo, Yang.

HG (8) Bennett, Burgoyne, Coady, Deslandes, Doherty, Graham, Kilman, Ruddy.

Notable U21s: Gibbs-White, Jordao, Neto, Vinagre.

Good to go with 24 players. Even though Nuno will use only 14 of them.
