A club statement on the Official Club Website said: ‘Denis Zakaria has informed the club of his intention to leave in the summer after five years at Gladbach.’

The news of the 25-year-old’s decision may have put a number of Premier League clubs on alert, with reported interest from several clubs.

Liverpool are thought to be interested in Zakaria as they look to strength their midfield ranks after Gini Wijnaldum departed to PSG in the summer.

Arsenal has also shown an interest in the Swiss star last summer and now that they can get Zakaria on a free transfer, they may look to bring him to the Emirates.

Gunners midfielder Granit Xhaka is an international teammate of the Gladbach star and Arsenal may look to use this link to give them the edge in negotiations.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton are also thought to be looking at the 25-year-old as are Italian giants Juventus.

Elsewhere, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel cannot understand the Premier League’s decision not to allow five substitutions.

Speaking to chelseafc.com, Tuchel said: “We want to win everything but we have two more games against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup and one in the FA Cup, all in between Liverpool and Man City games, so it does not stop but the schedule is not the problem.

“We love the schedule and we love to play through winter and be the only league to play through the winter, but we need also protection from the league.’

“I can absolutely not understand zero per cent why we are the only league that plays through the winter and we are the only league with three substitutes in a period of heavy Covid threat and heavy Covid situations.”
