Former Manchester City and West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini is the latest man to be linked with the vacant Everton job.

The Toffees are searching for a new boss after Carlo Ancelotti opted to re-join Real Madrid.

He spent 18 months in charge of Everton but has now left them back at square one.

According to the Daily Mail, Everton have lined up Pellegrini as his potential successor and will soon schedule talks with the Chilean.

They made contact with the manager in 2016 following the departure of Roberto Martinez.

Majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri is a big fan of Pellegrini and reckons he can take the team to the next level.

They were pursuing European football under Ancelotti but ultimately fell short on two occasions.

Ancelotti took charge in December 2019 and guided them to 12th at the end of his first six months.

In his first and only full campaign at Goodison Park, they finished 10th on 59 points.

They picked up four more wins and were 10 points to the better but still placed behind Leeds United and Arsenal.

Pellegrini is a Premier League title winner from his days with City. He was appointed in July 2013 and had a fairly successful time at the Etihad.

He won two League Cups, in 2014 and 2016 respectively, but his downfall came in their failed Champions League campaigns.

The club’s owners have always expressed their desire to win Europe’s major trophy and have resultantly pumped plenty of money into the squad.

But Pellegrini failed to take them into the final of the competition. They reached the last four in Pellegrini’s final season in charge, before being beaten by eventual winners Real Madrid.

Pellegrini left City in June 2016 and was replaced by Pep Guardiola. Domestic dominance has been the tone since then, although the club’s poor fortunes in Europe continued this season with defeat in the Champions League final.

The 67-year-old remains the manager of Real Betis, where he was appointed in August. He’s contracted in Spain until 2023, so it may take a significant offer to tempt him back to England.
