Virgil van Dijk was accused of “lazy play” in Liverpool’s Champions League defeat to Napoli.
Liverpool began the defence of their European crown with a 2-0 defeat in Naples on Tuesday evening. But if you’re going to lose a game, that was the perfect one.
A Dries Mertens penalty and stoppage-time strike from Fernando Llorente meant a wonderful performance from Fabinho went to waste as Liverpool lost at the San Paolo stadium for the second season in succession.
The club’s former full-back, Stephen Warnock, blamed influential centre-half Van Dijk for the second goal.
“Again it is Liverpool’s own undoing,” he told BBC Sport.
“We’re not used to saying it, but it’s lazy play from Virgil van Dijk and he misplaces the pass to Andrew Robertson, which is seized upon by Fernando Llorente. Game over.
“Liverpool will be desperately disappointed. They were in control of the second half, but with 10 minutes to go, Andrew Robertson sticks out his leg and concedes a penalty.
“Napoli took control from that point and they are going to be a strong side in this competition.”
