Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas has picked Jesse Lingard as Manchester United’s best player this season.
As part of a feature where pundits picked their Player of the Year for every Premier League club, there were predictable selections for Mohamed Salah and Kevin de Bruyne.
But when Nicholas was asked for his Manchester United shout, he refused to pick David de Gea. That’s despite David de Gea clearly being United’s best player.
‘I know David De Gea got it from the club but I hate to give it to goalkeepers unless they’ve been unbelievable for a lesser team,’ said Nicholas, perhaps unaware that Manchester United allowed more shots on goal than Watford this season.
‘Yes, he’s the best goalkeeper in the world, but I would actually give it to Jesse Lingard because he scores goals and brings entertainment to an otherwise bland team. He’s now a certainty to start in the World Cup for me.’
I mean fair enough, and it’s only an opinion. But we’re traditionalists, and think that the Player of the Year award should go to the best player of the year. Sue us.
