Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin has “explosive ability” and he would be a good replacement for Richarlison if he leaves Everton, according to Noel Whelan.

The Brazillian forward moved to the Premier League in 2017 as he joined Watford. He only had one season there before he signed for Everton for £35m plus add-ons ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

Some mocked the Toffees for paying that much for a player that only scored five times for Watford in 2017/18.

But Richarlison was quick to silence his doubters. He has consistently been one of Everton’s top players over the last three years. He has 42 goals and nine assists for them from 119 appearances across all competitions.

The forward has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, who are now managed by former Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Earlier this week, Whelan suggested that £80-90m for Richarlison would be “hard” for Everton to turn down.

The former Leeds United and Coventry attacker named Newcastle’s Saint-Maximin as an ideal replacement for Richarlison during an interview with Football Insider.

Saint-Maximin joined Newcastle United in 2019 on a six-year deal. He was involved in seven Premier League goals from his 25 outings last season. Whelan believes that the 24-year-old would “excite” the Everton fans:

He said: “Saint-Maximin is very direct. A player with that kind of explosive ability, like Adama Traore.

“Somebody that can open up gaps, skip past players, bring Calvert-Lewin, Rodriguez and other players into play.

“This is the sort of player that if they are going to lose a Richarlison you’ve got to replace them with.

“He’s somebody that is going to excite the Everton faithful. Bring that kind of life back, that edge-of-the-seat football player.

“He’s going to take their minds off the fact they’ve lost a Brazil number nine. However, he would be a player that you’ve got to look at injuries.

“You’ve got to see the fact that he went through a few niggles, a long spell out at Newcastle.

“He would be well worth a punt if you keep that player fit. He would definitely bring some excitement to Goodison Park.”
