Paul Merson thinks that Harry Kane would be the perfect frontman for Chelsea, but doesn’t think he’d make the move due to the backlash he would receive.

Chelsea have spent over £500million since Todd Boehly took over and it would be no surprise to see them dipping into the transfer market in the summer.

While they have addressed several areas of their squad, a natural goalscorer still seems to be missing from their ranks.

Kai Havertz has often led the line under Graham Potter as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hasn’t delivered and David Datro Fofana is a newcomer to the league.

Christopher Nkunku is set to join Chelsea in the summer however, it could still be argued that their squad lacks a natural number nine.

Merson thinks that Kane would be perfect for Chelsea and the project they are building.

He told Sky Sports: “Chelsea haven’t got that natural goal scorer. For all the great talent they do have, you do need that natural striker in front of goal who is going to get a goal out of nothing.

“We’ve seen this with Harry Kane and Tottenham for two weeks in a row. He has just won Spurs six points through unbelievable finishing against Fulham and Manchester City.

“Chelsea haven’t got that player, and there are not a lot of them around in the world of football.

“It’s a hard one. Everybody wants a centre forward, but Chelsea do need to get one. The one that is staring everybody in the face is Kane.

“But I don’t think he goes to Chelsea because of his Tottenham legacy, which I feel he’d lose if he moves to Stamford Bridge.”

Kane has been in tremendous form so far this season as he has scored 17 league goals across 22 appearances.

Having won their previous two matches, Spurs are back in the hunt for a top-four finish and Kane will be vital to their upcoming Champions League campaign.

Merson thinks that Chelsea will struggle to compete with the elite European sides if they do not have a recognised goalscorer in their team.

He added: “For me, it’s hard to win trophies without a striker. I said from day one of the season that Chelsea would struggle because they aren’t going to blow teams away without a goal scorer.

“And if you look at their results, that has been the case. They haven’t blown anyone away and teams are always in the game with Chelsea.

“We saw it earlier in the season against Tottenham. Chelsea dominated the game and created so many chances, but Tottenham popped up with an equaliser in added time.

“If Chelsea had a striker they’d have won that game, scoring five or six.”
