Agent Mino Raiola has defended Marco Verratti after his red card in PSG’s limp Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid – insisting Cristiano Ronaldo got away with worse.
Verratti’s second yellow card for protesting a decision ended PSG’s slim chances of overturning a 3-1 first-leg deficit as Real eventually ran out 5-2 aggregate winners, leaving Unai Emery facing a battle to keep his job.
It was the hot-headed Verratti’s third red card in just 44 Champions League appearances but Raiola came to his man’s defence.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, continued to set his own remarkable statistics on European football’s biggest stage.
Raiola, though, was more interested in another aspect of the record-breaker’s performance.
He said in Marca: “Maybe Marco has exaggerated, but his was just the frustration of a player who wanted to do everything possible to help his team qualify. It was a reaction of instinct and perhaps pride.
“After all, Ronaldo protested several times shamelessly, but was pardoned, even when he tried to kick Dani Alves.
“The red card cannot erase everything. Before that, Verratti was one of the stars of the game, like Areola.”
Incidentally, Areola is of course another client of Raiola.
