Ranking Divock Origi’s six goals for Liverpool against Everton

During Divock Origi’s time at Liverpool, there is one thing he’s enjoyed doing more than anything else: tormenting Everton.

Origi has scored six Premier League goals against Everton and only Steven Gerrard has netted more for Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

The striker left Liverpool at the end of the 2021-22 season but those six goals helped cement his cult hero status at Anfield.

“He is a legend on and off the pitch,” Jurgen Klopp said after Origi’s latest goal against Everton. “He is a fantastic footballer for me, and I know it sounds ridiculous as I don’t line him up often, he is a world-class striker, he is our best finisher, definitely.

“He always was and everybody would say the same when you see him do these kinds of things in training, then you see the quality of the squad and other players and it’s really hard I imagine [for him].

“Other players were not in the squad but in really good shape, I have really hard decisions to make because the boys all want to contribute and are responsible for the situation we are in.

“Everybody loves Div and rightly so. He was again very decisive. I’m very, very happy for him.”

We’ve ranked his six goals against Everton from worst to best.

6. Liverpool 2-0 Everton (April 2022)

After Liverpool struggled to break down the Everton defence, Klopp decided to turn to his bench and brought on Origi and Luis Diaz.

Andy Robertson gave Liverpool the lead moments later and the two substitutes then linked up to make it 2-0 in the 84th minute.

Diaz attempted a dramatic bicycle kick in the penalty area and Origi then displayed his striker’s instincts by heading home from close range.

While it won’t win the Goal of the Season award, it could move up the list if Liverpool go on to win a 20th league title at the end of 2021-22.

5. Liverpool 4-0 Everton (April 2016)

Origi’s first taste of a Merseyside derby at Anfield came in April 2016 and it won’t surprise you to know that he marked the occasion with a goal.

After James Milner swept a delightful cross to the back post in the 43rd minute, Origi rose above Everton’s John Stones and planted a superb header into the bottom corner.

A sign of things to come…

4. Liverpool 5-2 Everton (December 2019)

After Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah were named on the bench for the Merseyside derby in December 2019, Origi seized his opportunity with both hands.

Sadio Mane curled a perfectly weighted pass to the feet of Origi, who rounded Jordan Pickford in one smooth movement before coolly rolling the ball into the net.

It’s a good finish, but he managed to score an even better goal in the same game.

“He was outstanding, what a game he played,” Klopp said afterwards. “It wasn’t only the goals, but the goals were exceptional.

“The first one was a great, great attack in general. Adam [Lallana] wins the ball, Sadio [Mane] sees the run, his movement and passed the ball exactly in the right moment, one touch for Divock, an open goal, great.”

3. Liverpool 3-1 Everton (April 2017)

After Mane picked up an injury against Everton in 2017, Origi came onto the pitch in the 57th minute and made an immediate impact.

The Belgium international received the ball from Philippe Coutinho and took a stride towards the Everton box before making it 3-1 with a powerful finish.

But it was aided by a bizarre piece of goalkeeping by Joel Robles, who allowed the ball to nestle into the centre of the goal.

2. Liverpool 1-0 Everton (December 2018)

Admittedly, a headed goal from one yard out probably shouldn’t be in the top two of a ranking.

But it’s also important to remember the context. Origi’s goal against Everton in 2018 was an injury-time winner and it sent Anfield into utter euphoria.

“Definitely the Everton one, minute 90 plus six,” Origi told the Daily Telegraph in December 2019 when reflecting on his favourite Liverpool goal.

“I remember going into the airport in Manchester. There was an Everton fan on border control and he said to me, ‘I’m not going to let you in.’

“I was like: ‘What?’ It was all good, friendly banter.

“It’s the goal they speak about most in the city. It’s amazing. I love it. It shows the heart of the supporters. It’s Liverpool, you know.”

1. Liverpool 5-2 Everton (December 2019)

There was only ever going to be one winner.

With Liverpool leading 2-1 against Everton, centre-back Dejan Lovren spotted Origi’s run and picked him out with a stunning 40-yard pass.

The striker then brought the ball under control with a Luis Suarez-esque first touch before sidefooting a lob over Pickford and into the net.

“The second one… in Germany when I was young one highlight of my week was always goal of the week and goal of the month; when they selected these, that would have been 100 per cent in contention,” Klopp said after the game.

“It was just a great first touch and then finishing it off like this.”
