Ranking the greatest Premier League teams ever…

Matt Stead

Who would finish top of a mini Premier League involving the Treble winners, Invincibles, Mourinho’s first Chelsea, City and Liverpool?

Manchester United’s Treble winners. The Arsenal Invincibles. Jose Mourinho’s first Chelsea side. The Manchester City Centurions. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

In the world of football content, nothing is more powerful than assigning arbitrary rankings to things that cannot possibly be realistically compared, based only on personal preference.

So how about ordering the greatest teams in Premier League history just because?

Host Mark Smith and deputy editor Matt Stead do precisely that for the latest Football Isolation Show, during which the pair ponder where those five historic teams would finish in a theoretical mini league.

Both agree that the Invincibles would finish last, albeit unbeaten, while this season’s Liverpool side place above both City 2017/18 and, controversially, United 98/99.

The defensive powerhouse that was Chelsea in Mourinho’s debut season are rated highly but Mark, being like he is, throws a curveball to put a completely random United side top of the tree.
