Fabrizio Romano has clarified that Real Madrid see Chelsea forward Kai Havertz as a top target this summer as they look to reshuffle their squad.

Following the announcement of Benzema’s departure, Real Madrid are gearing up for a busy summer window.

They are expected to complete a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and they now turn their attention to their front line.

Along with Benzema, Marco Asensio is also set to depart the club and join PSG upon his contract expiring.

It recently transpired that Real Madrid see Havertz as a player of interest and Romano has provided the latest updates on the situation.

“Real Madrid want Kai Havertz, he’s a top target for Carlo Ancelotti but there’s still no direct contact between the clubs,” Romano clarified on Twitter.

“Chelsea are open to selling Havertz but they want important money. Talks are expected to take place soon.”

The German forward has often divided opinions since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020. His goal return hasn’t quite been as impressive as some would have hoped.

In 139 games for Chelsea, Havertz has scored 32 goals, which is an average of a goal every 4.3 matches.

Of course, the 23-year-old does offer more than just a goal threat. He tends to link the play well and can be a useful option with the right players around him.

Real Madrid likely see a player like Havertz as an alternative to Asensio rather than Benzema.

Romano himself recently explained that the Spanish club are interested in adding another creative outlet to their ranks.

“They believe that Kai Havertz is the kind of creative player with the skills Real Madrid don’t have in the current team,” Romano explained.

“Marco Asensio will leave the club, so one more creative player could be really important. He can play in different positions; behind the striker, as a central striker in emergency situations, and also on the wing.

“One crucial factor is Carlo Ancelotti. He really appreciates Kai Havertz, and considers Kai Havertz as a really, really good player. He has been a big fan of him for a long time.”

With Chelsea needing to make several sales this summer, selling Havertz to Real Madrid could make sense.

It’s also worth remembering that Chelsea have a deal in place to sign Christopher Nkunku who could take on Havertz’ role next season.
