Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino “thought” he had landed the Manchester United job last season.

Pochettino was dismissed as Spurs boss on Tuesday evening before the north London club acted quickly to bring in his replacement in the form of Jose Mourinho.

The Argentine was widely reported to have been considered for the United job before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer impressed in his caretaker role and was handed the job in a permanent basis.

And Redknapp has revealed that Pochettino was sure he had got the job at United before they hired Solskjaer.

“I’ve got to be honest, I think he wanted the Man United job. I think he wanted the Manchester United job last year. I know for a fact that he thought he had the job at United but he didn’t get it,” Redknapp told Sky Sports’ The Debate.

Redknapp also joked that he had put his name forward for the manager’s position at Spurs before Mourinho was appointed.

“I thought Mourinho, Ancelotti, who’s it going to be?” Redknapp added.

“I text Daniel last night, I said ‘I’m here Daniel, I’m just going for an Italian with my wife. A couple of hundred quid a week – I’m ready, I’m coming.

“He text me back and said ‘You’re a star. You’re my special guest at a Tottenham home game.’ I thought ‘thanks Daniel.'”
