Report: Gerrard set for Reds role after rejecting MK Dons

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has turned down the chance to take charge of League One strugglers MK Dons, according to reports.

The Milton Keynes-based side have been without a manager for almost a month after Karl Robinson’s six-year tenure at the club ended in late October.

Gerrard held early talks with the club over the possibility of him taking over as boss but any deal now seems dead in the water.

The Daily Mirror claims that although the former Reds captain was impressed with Dons chairman Pete Winkelman and his vision for the club, he didn’t want to rush into anything so soon after finishing his time in Los Angeles.

Gerrard’s exit from LA Galaxy was confirmed by the club last Tuesday and the midfielder is now looking for the next step in his career.

”I am now looking forward to spending time with my family as I consider the next stage of my career,” he said after his 18-month deal spell in America ended.

”When I left Liverpool I came to Los Angeles with the goal of helping the Galaxy lift another MLS Cup.

”I am of course disappointed to have not achieved that objective but I can look back at my time at the club with pride at what we accomplished, including two straight play-off appearances and countless memorable moments on the pitch.

”As someone who spent the whole of their career in Liverpool, it has been an incredible experience to come to Los Angeles and play for the LA Galaxy.”

The report in the Daily Mirror continues by saying that Gerrard could be offered the chance to join Jurgen Klopp’s coaching staff at Anfield, while combining it with a role at the FA.

It’s understood that Gerrard may have to wait until after the busy festive period for any formal talks to take place with the Merseysiders but Klopp has always said he would welcome him back.

FA Technical Director Dan Ashworth, meanwhile, is thought to be keen to introduce Gerrard and Frank Lampard as part of a wider coaching network linked to the national team.

As well as coaching roles, Gerrard has offers to extend his playing career but it is likely he will take his time to decide his next move.
