Liverpool are hoping that the summer sale of Mamadou Sakho will reportedly part-fund their bid to sign Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds are confident of recouping around £30million for the central defender, who is currently impressing on loan at Crystal Palace, with Roma rumoured to be chasing the Frenchman.
Sakho does not figure in Jurgen Klopp’s long-term plans, but central defence is an area that the Reds boss is looking to improve this summer, according to Metro.
Dejan Lovren has improved throughout the course of the season, while Joel Matip is currently partnering the Croatian and Ragnar Klavan is waiting in the wings.
The potential arrival of van Dijk, however, would bolster what is considered to be a weakness of Klopp’s Liverpool side, while it would also allow the Reds chief to switch to what is becoming an increasingly popular ‘three at the back’ system.
The only stumbling block over a move for the Dutchman would be his transfer fee, with Saints reportedly wanting around £50million for the 25-year-old, although bringing in £30m for Sakho would certainly soften that blow.
Liverpool are also likely to face the small matter of competition from Manchester City and Chelsea for the Netherlands international when the summer transfer window opens.
