West Ham are considering an offer to sign Harry Maguire on loan with Manchester United prepared to make a ‘considerable loss’ on the defender, according to The Mirror.
Maguire was bought for £80million in a deal that saw him become the most expensive defender in the world.
After an excellent spell with Leicester City, the 29-year-old has failed to impress for the Red Devils.
Although he has struggled at club level, England manager Gareth Southgate has always stuck by Maguire, starting him at the 2022 World Cup despite his lack of minutes this season.
His performances have always been good for the Three Lions, but Maguire’s stellar showing in Qatar has not helped him break back into Erik ten Hag’s team.
Ten Hag has opted to start left-back Luke Shaw in the centre of his defence in recent weeks and has preferred the combination of Raphael Varane and summer signing Lisandro Martinez.
This has put Maguire’s future at Old Trafford in doubt with a winter transfer potentially on the cards.
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand and ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy have recently urged Maguire to find a new club, with the latter saying a move to Newcastle United could make sense.
Despite his tough time at Old Trafford, I think many people will agree that Maguire would be an asset for a team playing in a system that suits him.
The report states that the Hammers are contemplating bringing Maguire in on loan until the end of the season.
David Moyes’ side have received a bid from Wolves for Craig Dawson, meaning the Londoners are ‘weighing up their options’.
Dawson is apparently keen to move to the Midlands after spending time with West Brom previously in his career.
Should the 32-year-old leave, Maguire could join, but the Irons have also added Senegal and Amiens defender Formose Mendy to their shortlist.
After spending £80m on Maguire back in 2019, United have now ‘accepted’ they will make a huge loss on the England international.
It is unclear how much the Red Devils would hope to receive should they put their captain up for sale.
You can’t imagine a club paying more than £25million for Maguire – who will also request a hefty salary.
He may, however, accept a pay cut in order to play regular football. He is effectively United’s fourth-choice centre-half behind Varane, Martinez and Shaw; plus Ten Hag probably sees Maguire and Lindelof as two players with similar ability.
