Report reveals the only transfer Liverpool could make ‘before the deadline’

It is set to be a fairly quiet last week of the window for Liverpool but if they sign anyone it is likely to be Fulham attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho, according to reports.

The Portugal-born England under-18 international has been on fire for Fulham this season as the Londoners sit eight points clear at the top of the Championship table.

Carvalho has scored eight goals and provided two assists in 17 Championship appearances for Marco Silva’s men this campaign.

One player per Premier League club with less than a week to move

Carvalho, who was selected in our top five teenagers in the Championship feature earlier in the season, is in demand with a host of clubs lining up to take the 19-year-old, who made his senior debut in the Premier League last term.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano insisted last week that Liverpool had been monitoring him for some time and that their recruitment department see him as a ‘top future talent’.

And now The Athletic has a Liverpool transfer update by claiming their ‘quiet transfer window’ is ‘unlikely to change before the deadline’ – but if one player is coming in it would be Carvalho.

James Pearce writes in The Athletic:

‘Liverpool retain an interest in Fulham attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho. The club’s recruitment staff are monitoring the teenager’s situation closely.

‘If Fulham decide to cash in before the deadline then Liverpool will have a decision to make but, as things stand, the player will be staying put until his contract expires in the summer.’

It is more likely that there will be a couple of outgoings before the deadline with the Reds hoping someone pays their £15m valuation of Nat Phillips after rejecting an offer from Watford, while Loris Karius is ‘free to leave if he can sort out a suitable move’.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have coped well without Africa Cup of Nations absentees Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita this month with Diogo Jota banging in the goals.

When asked whether he was in the form of his life, he told the club’s official matchday programme: “I always find that hard to answer. I was asked that question after I first joined Liverpool, I think before I got injured last season, but it’s always hard to say.

“Sometimes in games you are just in the right place at the right time and you just need to tap it in and sometimes, like that recent game against Leicester, I was nowhere near that moment, so it’s hard to know.

“If I’m in the moment of my life, why couldn’t I get a proper chance against Leicester, for example? I think each game is different and a new challenge and you always need to be at your best to be able to perform at your highest level.”
