Former Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta thinks now is the time for Harry Kane to leave Tottenham, amid interest from the reigning Premier League champions.

Spurs beat City 1-0 in their opening league fixture on Saturday, with Heung-Min Son scoring the only goal of the game.

City have now lost their last three competitive matches without scoring, a run which includes the Champions League final defeat to Chelsea and the Community Shield loss to Leicester.

Their recent form has put more pressure on Guardiola to find Sergio Aguero’s successor up front.

Speaking about the situation, Zabaleta told the PA news agency: “We’ll see if the money is there and will splash the money for Harry Kane but [it] will be nice to see him playing for City.

“He’s in the right moment for him to go to a different club and have [a] different experience, when you look at all the top teams they are looking for players who can score 25 goals a season, you always need players like that.

“Obviously Sergio [Aguero] left the club and they only have Gabriel Jesus as a proper striker. We all know the quality of Kane if you want to win trophies and [he] knows he’s done enough for Spurs and wants to move, maybe City are one of those clubs.”

Guardiola confirmed City’s interest in the England captain on August 6. However, he went on to say that no deal would be completed if Spurs were not willing to negotiate.

Daniel Levy has reportedly set his price tag at £160million.

City have already spent £100m to land Jack Grealish from Aston Villa, making him the most expensive British player of all time in the process.

When asked about Grealish’s transfer fee, Zabaleta continued: “If you look at the markets these days, maybe yes [he is worth it], but it is still ridiculous. Every year it gets worse and worse.

“The money has been increasing massively over the past few years so if you pay £100m for Grealish he is still young so it was a great signing for Man City, especially as he can play in a number of different positions.

“Look at the transfer fees these days, they are crazy. It wasn’t like that years ago when I first came to the Premier League and if you want to buy some top player from any club they will ask for big money.”
