Rio Ferdinand says he was “massively impressed” by Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah during their 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The 22-year-old struck in the 58th minute to seal the three points for Thomas Tuchel’s side after Marcos Alonso and Christian Pulisic had put the Blues into a two-goal lead.

Chalobah, who has been at Stamford Bridge since the age of eight, was left in tears following his fine second-half strike from distance.

And Ferdinand was pleased to see the emotion from the defender as it “reinforces that this is still a beautiful game”.

“That result wasn’t a shock for me because Crystal Palace are in a mad rebuild under Patrick Vieira, and good luck to him by the way.

“That game was a gimme for Chelsea. The big thing for me is Trevoh Chalobah. I watched him in the Super Cup game, I was massively impressed with him and the way he defended.

“He had three or four big moments, defensively, when he pulled the hat out of the bag. He then comes up with a goal at the weekend.

“To see the emotion in a young player like that, it just reinforces that this is still a beautiful game.

“They have got a deep squad, that’s the thing with Chelsea. We talk about Manchester United’s array of talent but Chelsea are the same.

“Thomas Tuchel has got to pick from Lukaku, Werner, Havertz, Mount, Ziyech, Pulisic, Hudson-Odoi, that’s seven players all worthy of playing in those positions.”

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website after their victory over Palace, Chalobah said: “When I first started pre-season my aim was to impress the manager, day in, day out.

“He said I did well in the pre-season, but I was a bit surprised to start the Super Cup, but it shows my work has paid off.

“He has given me the opportunity and I have taken it with both hands. It’s important in football to stay consistent, stay grounded, stay hungry and always want more.

“It’s been a long-held dream to play for this club.”
