Former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has picked out Sir Alex Ferguson as the best manager he has had ahead of Louis van Gaal and Arsene Wenger.
Van Persie spent just one season under Ferguson before the Scot retired from management, while in contrast he spent eight years with Wenger at Arsenal.
Van Gaal coached Van Persie at international level for the Netherlands and at Man Utd but the Dutch striker thinks there was something particularly “super” about Fergie.
“Ferguson really was a super manager,” Van Persie wrote in the book ‘LVG – The Manager and the Total Person’ (via The Metro).
“It was so brilliant how he always kept the entire squad happy and focussed. Wenger was a combination of Ferguson and Van Gaal. Arsene always emphasised all the positive things and he looked at what would work for the long term.
“Tactically he [Van Gaal] is a genius. You can’t deny that. I have had managers who had their own strengths. But Ferguson really was a super manager.”
