Rodgers told physio to mark Chelsea target ‘like Baresi’

Celtic Brendan Rodgers says he told his physios to mark Moussa Dembele “like Franco Baresi” to ensure Chelsea could not get to him.

Dembele was involved in one of the stories of a rather drab transfer deadline day, with the striker travelling to London to see a knee specialist.

It was claimed by many that he was in the capital to discuss a shock late move to Premier League leaders Chelsea, but it soon emerged that he was there only to monitor an injury.

Rodgers has explained that he ensured a £30million swoop would not take place as he told his physio to “stay tight to him” like legendary Italian defender Franco Baresi.

“We had to make sure the physio didn’t lose sight of him down there,” he told STV.

“Ironically the hospital he was in was in Chelsea, believe it or not. So I said to Tim (Williamson), be like Franco Baresi and just stay tight to him.

“But he was happy to come back. He is loving it here. He got some fluid out of his knee, he has had a good reaction to it, so we will see how he is for the weekend.”
