Roma forward Nicolo Zaniolo celebrates his goal

Roma have reportedly rejected a Tottenham bid for playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo.

Zaniolo wasn’t in the best form last season for Roma, contributing just two goals and two assists in 28 Serie A appearances for the Giallorossi.

The Italy international has scored 22 goals in 111 appearances for the Italian club after leaving Inter Milan’s youth team for the Italian capital in 2018 in a deal worth €4.5m.

Tottenham have already been busy this transfer window, signing Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster on free transfers, Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona, while they shelled out fees for Djed Spence, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison.

And now Calciomercato journalist Marizio Russo (via Sport Witness) claims transfer chief Fabio Paratici has put in a bid for Zaniolo, which has been ‘refused’ by Roma.

Russo says Spurs offered £25m plus centre-back Joe Rodon, but the bid fell short of the Serie A side’s valuation of the midfielder.

Zaniolo has two years left on his contract and is valued by Transfermarkt at £29.7m.

Paratici wants to reignite an ‘old obsession’ in the form of Zaniolo – who he wanted to sign while leading transfer business at Juventus – and Spurs may yet return with a second bid.

But Fabrizio Romano claimed on Thursday that further signings have been put on hold until August as Paratici turns his attention to selling unwanted players.

“For Tottenham, they have had a fantastic summer in my personal opinion. They changed the strategy of the club,” Romano told the Wondergoal Podcast.

“We are always used to seeing Tottenham not spending a lot of money or spending just at the end of the window. In this case, they already signed six players.”

“At the moment, they’re really happy with the squad they have.”

Steven Bergwijn has left the club for Ajax in a £26.1m deal and Cameron Carter-Vickers has joined Celtic for £6.3m, but Romano claimed the priority is to sell a quartet of players, valued at £82.8m in total, as they look to balance the books.

“They need to sell players, (Giovanni) Lo Celso, (Tanguy) Ndombele, and find a solution for Sergio Reguilón, who in my opinion is a very good opportunity because he is a very good left back available to the market. Also other players like (Harry) Winks.”

“So they’re looking for solutions for these players.”

Any further business this summer will depend on player sales, but Romano believes Paratici could look to the market again in August should they move a few unwanted players on.

He added: “Then they will decide if there will be some opportunity in the market; jumping into it or not.”

“I think in August, Fabio Paratici will look at some opportunities, but as of now, they’re really happy with the market they had.”

“Tottenham is focusing on selling players, because they have too many players with Antonio Conte right now.”
