Romano lifts lid on ‘surprise’ Liverpool transfer ‘leak’ with midfield signing ‘close’ to being completed
Fabrizio Romano has offered his take on the major claim that Liverpool are ‘close’ to signing Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich.
Liverpool are expected to enforce a squad rebuild this summer after their disappointing form this season under Jurgen Klopp.
They are likely to strengthen in midfield, with a couple of signings expected to add more quality in that area of the pitch.
Jude Bellingham is recognised as Liverpool’s main target, but they are also being linked with the likes of Mason Mount and Matheus Nunes.
Gravenberch has emerged as an alternative target in recent weeks. He joined Bayern last summer from Ajax for around £16m but he has only started once in the Bundesliga this term.
Liverpool often work in the shadows to get transfers over the line before supporters and the media get wind of what is going on.
But ex-Reds defender Jose Enrique appeared to leak the signing of Gravenberch when speaking during a live stream earlier this week.
“This player is ours [Liverpool] amigo, Gravenberch,” Enrique said.
His co-host then pointed out: “Yeah, the problem is that his agent is the same agent as Bobby Firmino.”
Enrique then doubled down: “Amigo, it’s the same agent as me! Team Raiola, amigo we had a meeting not long ago in London, this is our player.”
Enrique’s co-host – perhaps wary that the pundit was forgetting that he was live on YouTube – warned him: “Be careful, you’re on live.”
It is worth taking this with a pinch of salt, but it has been reported that Gravenberch’s move to Liverpool is ‘close’ to being completed ahead of the summer.
Romano has acted to pour cold water on Liverpool’s excitement, though. The transfer guru is ‘not aware of this deal’ and it is ‘too early to say’ whether he will leave Bayern Munich later this year.
‘I’ve had Liverpool fans asking me about Jose Enrique’s surprise comments, when he seemed to ‘leak’ the fact that Ryan Gravenberch would be joining the Reds,’ Romano wrote for Caught Offside.
‘Honestly, I’m not aware of this deal. Bayern wanted to keep Ryan Gravenberch in January despite a lot of interest and nothing has changed at this stage, we will see in the summer.
‘He’s a fine player who surely has a big future, but it’s too early to say right now where his future lies.’
