Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Man Utd were “offered” 15 players in one “crazy” week during a hectic summer transfer window.
The Red Devils backed Erik ten Hag with six new signings this summer with Antony, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, Martin Dubravka and Lisandro Martinez all signing.
While most of their Premier League rivals, such as Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool, had fairly controlled transfer windows, the recruitment at Man Utd looked chaotic at times.
Their long pursuit of Frenkie de Jong, despite the Netherlands international making it clear he wanted to stay at Barcelona, was a waste of time before eventually signing Casemiro after a move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot fell through.
They demonstrated more bad judgement by attempting to sign free-scoring Marko Arnautovic from Bologna before a huge backlash from fans ended those negotiations.
In the same week as they decided not to sign Arnautovic, Romano claims that Man Utd were offered 15 players as they battled to get the right players in.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “Two deals that were absolutely on for Manchester United. What happened? The following week, that crazy week, [Adrien] Rabiot turned down Man United because of the salary and United say no because of his salary request.
“Marko Arnautovic collapses because the fans are crazy about that story.
“More than 15 players were offered to Man United that week. Memphis Depay on a free transfer, Moises Caicedo was a player considered for the midfield as Rabiot was not joining, Leandro Paredes was discussed by Man United and PSG. PSG were looking for a solution for Paredes and Man United were looking for a different solution.
“Weston McKennie was a player offered to Man United, but they were interested in a different kind of player for the midfield.
“There were also for other positions. For the winger, because the Antony deal was on standby, [Yannick] Carrasco was offered on a permanent deal, not on loan. Christian Pulisic was discussed by Manchester United and Chelsea, but United tried for a loan and Chelsea had no intention of accepting that.
“Hirving Lozano was offered to Man United and they said no.
“Many other positions, for example the right-back. Sergino Dest was offered, it is also important to mention Thomas Meunier.
“He was offered but Borussia Dortmund had no intention to proceed.”
Man Utd started off the season in terrible form with losses to Brighton and Brentford in their first two games, with the 4-0 defeat to the latter sending shockwaves around the fanbase.
But they have recovered under Ten Hag to record four straight wins in the Premier League and have moved up to fifth in the table.
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has been impressed by their “togetherness” in recent weeks but insists their “pragmatic” approach is not “the Manchester United way”.
“If you beat Liverpool, everything in the garden seems rosy again,” Souness told talkSPORT.
“I think they’re playing in a pragmatic way now, they’re not playing in the Manchester United way. As long as I’ve been in football, United play in a certain way [which is] is on the front foot, it’s exciting. They’re committed to playing that way because it’s United, one of, if not the biggest, club’s in the world.
“They’ve been impressive because they’ve shown a togetherness to win games and when the going got tough at the start of that second half, they dug in. They conceded one, they were rocking but they got through that and scored a couple of goals on the break.”
