Man Utd right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka arrives at the ground

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims Man Utd will only sign a new right-back if Aaron Wan-Bissaka leaves with Denzel Dumfries “appreciated” by Erik ten Hag.

Wan-Bissaka only played 20 Premier League matches last term as interim boss Ralf Rangnick preferred Diogo Dalot to him towards the end of the campaign.

There have been rumours that Ten Hag could also deploy Dalot ahead of Wan-Bissaka next term with talk of Man Utd looking to sign a possible upgrade on both the full-backs.

And Inter Milan defender Dumfries is one potential option if Wan-Bissaka leaves with Romano revealing Ten Hag’s admiration for the Netherlands international.

“Manchester United will think of a right back only if Aaron Wan-Bissaka leaves,” Romano wrote in his CaughtOffside column.

“The club are taking the time in pre-season to assess him and other players. My understanding is that Diogo Dalot is in the plans of Erik ten Hag, with the Portuguese youngster appreciated by the manager.

“Despite some of the transfer rumours, Jonathan Clauss has never been a Manchester United target, he will soon sign with Olympique Marseille; Denzel Dumfries is appreciated by Ten Hag but there are still no negotiations with Inter Milan.”

Dumfries, who moved to Inter Milan in 2021 for €15m after impressing at Euro 2020, only started 21 of 33 Serie A appearances last term as the Nerazzurri finished as runners-up in the race for the Scudetto.

And former Premier League striker Noel Whelan claimed last month that Dumfries could bring the goal contributions to Man Utd  that Wan-Bissaka is lacking.

When asked if Dumfries could be everything that Wan-Bissaka isn’t for Man Utd, Whelan told Football Insider: “Yeah, absolutely. He’s that attacking full-back that they desperately need.

“Defensively, Wan-Bissaka is very sound – he’s rarely beaten. Going forward, he just lacks that quality and that creativity.

“You need that now as a full-back, it’s expected. You’re box-to-box. Not only are you a defender, you’re a midfielder and a winger as well at times.

“There aren’t enough assists and certainly not enough goals in his game. He very rarely gets involved in terms of numbers on the board.”
