Romano speaks on Rashford

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that one of Manchester United’s “priorities” is to tie Marcus Rashford down to a new contract.

Rashford progressed through the ranks at United and he has grown to be a key player for his boyhood club.

His form has declined in recent years though. He barely featured for England at the 2021 European Championships and he underwent shoulder surgery following that tournament.

England need a shot in the arm and Ivan Toney could be just the drug

The forward returned to action last October but he struggled for United. In his defence, he was not on his own as the Red Devils were dire under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

The Englishman was linked with a move to PSG earlier this summer but he did not get a move away before the transfer window closed.

Erik ten Hag replaced Rangnick and this fresh start came at the right time for Rashford, who has looked like a player reborn in the opening weeks of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 24-year-old has grabbed three goals and two assists in six Premier League games so he cannot be far off earning an England recall.

Ex-Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has not been sold on Rashford, though. He thinks the attacker is “one-dimensional”:

“I don’t think he’s as good as people make him out to be. I think it’s unfair on the boy, too,” Jordan told talkSPORT.

“Clearly, it’s a ridiculous argument to suggest he is not a good player. He plays for his country and arguably the biggest club in the country.

“He’s done some very commendable things. But he is not a global superstar.

“He isn’t the best footballer to ever step foot on a pitch, and he is a little one-dimensional.

“He’s done nothing in the last two years… His attitude last season was poor.”

His long-term Man Utd future is in doubt though as his current contract is due to expire in 2023. But it is understood that the club have an option to extend his deal by a further season.

Romano has revealed that United are keen to keep Rashford at the club beyond 2023.

He has spoken about the possibility of David De Gea, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw and Fred getting new contracts. All of these players are out of contract next year as things stand:

“I’m aware there’s been speculation about new contracts for five players at Manchester United: David de Gea, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw, Fred, and Marcus Rashford,” Romano wrote for Caught Offside.

“Fans have been asking me about this, and so this is what I know: None of these negotiations are close to being completed, yet.

“Manchester United will decide in the coming months, while many of these players like Rashford (one of the priorities) have clauses included to extend the contract for a further year, so Erik ten Hag and the board will soon decide how to proceed.”
