Romero: I can become United No 1 under Mourinho

Sergio Romero believes he can become Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper under Jose Mourinho.

Romero played just ten games in all competitions for United last season, but actually started the first six games of the campaign as Louis van Gaal opted not to play David de Gea, who was wanted by Real Madrid.

The Spaniard eventually remained at Old Trafford and reprised his role as first choice thereafter, with Romero featuring in only the FA Cup, Capital One Cup and Europa League after August.

Romero conceded just two goals in four appearances, keeping three clean sheets in three United victories in the process.

The 29-year-old ended the season having played fewer Premier League minutes than Luke Shaw however.

But with the announcement of Jose Mourinho as manager to replace Van Gaal, the Argentinean believes he can become a starter not only for club, but for country too.

“Mourinho knows I’m a hard worker and he can count on me,” Romero said. “I think the door to becoming United’s first goalkeeper is open again for me.”
