Romeu satisfied with Saints competition

Summer signing Oriol Romeu has praised the “competition” throughout the squad at Southampton, and is hoping the side can push on this season.

Southampton underwent yet another summer of upheaval in the transfer window, losing the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Nathaniel Clyne and Toby Alderweireld to their Premier League rivals.

Romeu was one of six arrivals this summer, with Ronald Koeman once again tasked with replacing his high-profile stars.

The former Chelsea midfielder has praised the standard of Southampton’s squad, and hopes the side’s first victory of the season against Norwich last time out can instigate a run of form.

“I think we have a good squad,” Romeu said. “The last few games we were all new and we have to get to know each other.

“But I think it will be even better in the next games. I’m really looking forward to more games and to keep playing like we did against Norwich City.

“Competition is the key to success. The better players you have on your side, they will make you a better player. I’m sure about the quality of the team.

“We have a very good squad, very good players and we have to be confident with ourselves to go out and do the job.”
