Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo celebrate a goal

Mesut Ozil has jumped to the defence of his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo by calling out critical pundits “who don’t have a career anymore”.

Ronaldo enjoyed some of the best years of his career with the German playmaker playing behind him at Real Madrid.

They spent three years together and the Portuguese forward was disappointed to see Ozil leave for Arsenal in 2013.

Ronaldo reportedly said at the time: “The sale of Ozil is very bad news for me. He was the player who best knew my moves in front of goal… I’m angry about Ozil leaving.”

The 37-year-old has come under a lot of criticism this year.

He reportedly tried to force a move out of Manchester United in the summer before putting in below-par performances for the Red Devils.

Ronaldo then forced United to sack him last month after an explosive interview with his best friend Piers Morgan.

Despite his poor conduct off and on the pitch – he literally refused to come off the bench and walked down the tunnel during a game against Tottenham – Ozil does not understand the “constant negativity from the press”. Erm…

Writing on his Twitter account, Ozil – or someone else on his behalf – blasted the media, who are “just trying to get clicks”, as well as pundits who “just want to get attention” using Ronaldo’s “big name”.

The pundits in question will be Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney, who both played with the Portugal captain at Old Trafford.

Ozil wrote: “I really don’t get where this constant negativity from the press about Cristiano comes from…

“The Media is just trying to get clicks, and pundits who don’t have a career anymore just want to get attention with his big name and try to make him look bad…

“He is soon 38 years old – so what’s the surprise that he doesn’t score 50 goals a season anymore? Every football fan out there should be happy to have seen him playing world class football for 20 years.

“I don’t think anyone from the new generation will be able to match his numbers again. He will forever be in his own category. Everyone should show more respect to one of the greatest athletes in sports history…”

Someone doesn’t want to get slated in Ronaldo’s next interview, I think.
