Cristiano Ronaldo claims Sir Alex Ferguson is the “main” reason that he re-signed for Manchester United this summer.

The Premier League side confirmed yesterday that Ronaldo had signed a two-year contract at the club, with an option of a third, after they sealed the deal with Juventus.

He returns to Old Trafford 12 years after he left the club to move to Spanish outfit Real Madrid in a world-record deal at the time of £80m.

Ronaldo had an amazing relationship with Ferguson and he has revealed that the former Man Utd boss convinced him to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 2021 side.

When asked what part Ferguson played his return to Old Trafford, Ronaldo told the club’s official website: “As everybody knows, since I signed for Manchester [United] at 18, Sir Alex Ferguson was the key.

“I remember when we play against Manchester when I was at Sporting Lisbon. For me, Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father in football, he helped me a lot, he taught me many things.

“And in my opinion he had a big role because of the relationship that we had, we keep in touch all the time and he’s an unbelievable person.

“I really like him a lot and he was the main key for me to be in the position that I am, that I signed for Manchester United.”

Ronaldo had already spoken when the deal was announced yesterday, he said: “Manchester United is a club that has always had a special place in my heart, and I have been overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since the announcement on Friday.

“I cannot wait to play at Old Trafford in front of a full stadium and see all the fans again. I’m looking forward to joining up with the team after the international games, and I hope we have a very successful season ahead.”

United boss Solskjaer added: “You run out of words to describe Cristiano. He is not only a marvellous player, but also a great human being. To have the desire and the ability to play at the top level for such a long period requires a very special person.

“I have no doubt that he will continue to impress us all and his experience will be so vital for the younger players in the squad. Ronaldo’s return demonstrates the unique appeal of this club and I am absolutely delighted he is coming home to where it all started.”
