The Reds sit 13 points clear of champions Manchester City heading into Sunday’s clash with Manchester United, the only team to have taken points off the league leaders this term.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 38 Premier League outings and last lost away to City over a year ago.
Speaking on Sky Sports‘ coverage of Sunday’s game, Keane called for calm over labelling Jurgen Klopp‘s side as one of the best in the league’s history.
“[Liverpool] have been brilliant in Europe over the past few years,” he said.
“And everyone’s been getting carried away with them because they are so brilliant.
“But this will be their first league title. You’ve got to win a few league titles first.”
Graeme Souness then pointed out: “They are bordering on being that [great] when you look at their consistency. Second last year, they would have won it in any other year.
“Losing in the Champions League final to poor goalkeeping. They’re close to being a great team.”
Keane replied: “Close? You said they finished second. It doesn’t matter how many points you get you finished second. Do me a favour.”
Elsewhere, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has said that he is unaffected by United counterpart Harry Maguire overtaking him as the world’s most expensive defender.
Liverpool paid £75m to Southampton in December 2017 to bring Van Dijk to Anfield, before United stumped up with £80m to sign Maguire from Leicester.
Van Dijk said: “There was always going to be a time when that was going to change, because that’s the market.
“He doesn’t have any influence on that. We players don’t have any effect on the price and it’s the same for him as it was for me. But the price does come with pressure.
“I thought it wouldn’t change too much for him because at Man Utd there’s always a lot of pressure anyway — there is at all the big clubs.”
