Keane tears into Chelsea star for doing ‘absolutely nothing’

Roy Keane has criticised Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount for lacking aggression in their 3-1 loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne all struck in the first half as City thumped the Blues at Stamford Bridge to heap pressure on Frank Lampard.

City shook off a clutch of positive coronavirus cases and Benjamin Mendy’s breach of social-distancing protocols to stun Chelsea with three first-half goals inside the first 35 minutes in west London.

Callum Hudson-Odoi neatly netted a late consolation for the hosts, but Lampard’s men were second best in all departments.

And Keane reckons Mount could’ve done more to prevent Gundogan’s opening goal as he was afraid to make a tackle.

Keane said on Sky Sports: “Mason Mount, he’s standing there as a midfielder getting back. The centre-half has got to do better but Mason Mount is watching him, he’s got to put a challenge in.

“Frank Lampard will be scratching his head after the game, he’ll be frustrated. When you’ve got your midfielders coming back – and I know Mount is more of an attacking player – but he’s got to put his foot in, make a sacrifice, tackle him!

“It’s all lovely play from City, nice and tidy, but no tackling from anybody, giving players time and space. Mount’s just come into the picture there, I’m looking at him going: You’ve got to slide in! Stick your foot in! Look at Mount, he’s done absolutely nothing. Put your foot in! Tackle somebody! You’ve got to be aggressive.”

Fellow pundit Graeme Souness suggested that Mount had been frightened to make a tackle in case he gave a penalty away, to which Keane replied: “I think he was just frightened anyway, no matter where it was on the pitch!”
