Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka celebrates his goal

John Barnes has detailed where he thinks Bukayo Saka can still improve as the Arsenal winger continues to deliver for club and country.

Saka has 22 goal contributions in the league this season and has already had his most prolific season to date.

The Arsenal star was also on target for England over the weekend with a fine strike from outside the box against Ukraine.

Barnes has been impressed with the form of Saka, but he has insisted that he needs to show these levels consistently.

“Well the only thing you need to add to your game when you’re playing as well as him is your consistency,” Barnes told talkSPORT.

“Are we going to say that’s he’s going to be scoring three goals every game, and being much better at scoring goals and creating?

“He’s not, because he scores quite regularly, he creates, he works hard for the team.

“But he has to do that every week, and he’s now showing that level of consistency, but it still only has been three-quarters of a season.

“So, we still have to insist on him doing this week-in, week-out whenever he gets an opportunity to grow. But in terms of what he’s doing now, it’s fine.”

Saka is one of only a handful of players in Europe this season to be in double figures for goals and assists.

In the Premier League, Saka has been involved in 33% of the goals that Arsenal have scored and he continues to get better.

Gareth Southgate was pleased with the Arsenal winger and described the ruthless side to his game now.

“It was a top-level finish. That is the ruthless part he has added to his game in the last 18 months or so,” Southgate told reporters.

“There were times you weren’t sure he was going to finish but now he has that confidence in front of goal.

“His hunger and his humility have got him on a good path so he has all the attributes to continue to improve and learn because that is how he is wired, and I don’t see that changing with him and his family. I am not going to get drawn on where he is in world football.

“He is progressing brilliantly, a joy to work with. When he is in front of goal now he plays with real belief and that is evident with his club and with his games with us.”
