Santo: Spurs punished for making ‘a lot of mistakes’ against Palace

Nuno Espirito Santo bemoaned his Spurs side making “a lot of mistakes” as they were beaten 3-0 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Tottenham struggled to get going in the first half. Palace grew into the game as they caused the visitors more problems as the first 45 minutes went on.

Shortly after the restart, Japhet Tanganga fouled Wilfried Zaha and the two players confronted each other in the aftermath. Their teammates got involved before Tanganga and Zaha were booked by Jonathan Moss.

Early winner: Edouard, the Palace striker we all ‘wanna be’

Tanganga was not on the pitch for much longer as he was shown a second yellow card for a late challenge on Jordan Ayew.

Palace were able to make the most of this as they were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute. Zaha calmly converted it past Hugo Lloris.

Odsonne Edouard came on for his debut before the end. He made an instant impact as he netted a quickfire brace to make it 3-0. This earns Patrick Vieira his first win as a Premier League manager.

Santo told BT Sport (as reported by PA) that Spurs there were “a lot of obstacles” at play for them against Palace:

“There were a lot of obstacles, but a lot of mistakes also, so not a good game. We didn’t know how to play the game and things get harder and harder with situations that happen.”

Santo was also asked about Tanganga’s red card. He said that the sending off was not an excuse for a disappointing performance:

He added: “I didn’t have a chance to see. From where I am, I don’t know, but the referee does his job, it’s not about that.

“But the referee is something that we don’t speak about, we don’t mention. We have to look at ourselves and today we didn’t play well.”

Palace boss Vieira praised Edouard after he scored a brace in his Premier League debut:

“I’m really pleased for Edouard because he just arrived a couple of days ago and he’s training well with the team and starting to know his team-mates. But the way he finished, it just shows that he’s a proper goalscorer.

“He’s a player inside the box who will take his chances. He’s really comfortable around that area. He’s a goalscorer and I think there is more to come from him.”
