Robbie Savage has said that anyone questioning Cristiano Ronaldo makes him laugh after the Man Utd striker scored the winning goal in a 3-2 comeback victory over Atalanta in the Champions League.

The Red Devils had given themselves an uphill task after they went into the half-time interval 2-0 down with goals from Mario Pasalic and Merih Demiral giving the Serie A side a deserved lead.

But back came Man Utd in the second half with goals from Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire setting up a grand finale as Ronaldo headed home to make it 3-2 at the death.

Atalanta comeback shows why Man Utd must get rid of Solskjaer…

The Portugal international has now scored six goals in eight matches in all competitions after completing a summer move from Juventus.

His impact in terms of goals won’t have surprised Jamie Carragher but he suggested last month that Ronaldo was a “better signing for the Premier League than Manchester United”.

Speaking in his Daily Telegraph column after Ronaldo scored a brace on his return debut against Newcastle United, Carragher added: “As we saw last weekend against Newcastle United on his second United debut, Ronaldo’s mere presence is a certainty of goals, and his comeback has transformed the mood at his club and raised the profile of English football even more.

“But the broader question for United is whether Ronaldo’s arrival gets them any nearer to being a team that can win the title and Champions League again.

“On the evidence of the first few games, albeit they have won three of their first five matches, I would say no.

“Ronaldo’s matchwinning ability will inevitably make United stronger. What his arrival alone cannot do is turn United into a title-winning unit or impose the distinctive way of playing they still lack.”

And in a bit of a thinly-disguised pop at Carragher, Savage said in commentary on Wednesday night: “Some people saying it was a signing for the league not United. Questioning that man does make me laugh.”

Ronaldo has come in for some stick for the way he has played over the last few matches at Man Utd but Solskjaer has hit back at his critics.

“If anyone wants to criticise Ronaldo for attitude and work rate just watch the game today,” Solskjaer said.

“I said make sure we get the next goal and as long as we did not concede the next goal I knew we’d win the game.”
