Paul Scholes speaks about Man Utd

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes agreed with Arsene Wenger’s criticism of Jadon Sancho and Antony after the Red Devils lost 6-3 to Man City on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s side were blown away by their arch-rivals in the first half with Man Utd 4-0 down by the interval.

Phil Foden and Erling Haaland both got their hat-trick goals in the second half as City added to City’s tally, while a brace from Anthony Martial and a great strike from Antony made the scoreline look slightly better.

Former Arsenal manager Wenger was particularly scathing of the way Man Utd defended down the flanks with Sancho and Antony giving the back four little protection.

“What is for me unbelievable in the first half is that Man United has defended so badly on the flanks,” Wenger told beIN Sports.

“From the first minute on Diogo Dalot got a yellow card and Sancho and Antony did not contribute defensively. They were, in the whole half, flooded on the flanks and they were always in trouble.

“After that, when they had the ball, I felt they were obsessed by respecting too much the game plan. They wanted always to go too quickly forward and lost so many balls and didn’t have enough possession.

“They didn’t play for possession, they wanted just to get on the counter-attack.”

Scholes, who played in a team with David Beckham and Ryan Giggs on the wings, posted a picture of the pair on Instagram in a dig at Sancho and Antony.

The accompanying caption read: “Anyone remember when wingers used to help their full-backs?”

Scholes and Wenger weren’t the only pundits to be baffled by the level of performance with Man Utd legend Roy Keane claiming the whole side should be “embarrassed” by their first-half display.

Keane said on Sky Sports: “There’s nothing for United to take out from this game. The players should be embarrassed. You can’t go into half-time 4-0 down in a derby game.

“It’s hugely embarrassing, as brilliant as City were United were desperate, particularly in midfield. They were over-ran in midfield and defensively they were all over the shop.

“Again we look at leadership… There was nothing there from Man Utd. If you’re giving players like [Kevin] De Bruyne time and space, you’re looking for trouble.

“United got punished and rightly so. Top level sport is fantastic but it’s brutal. Today, it was brutal for Manchester United as when you’re not quite at it, you get hammered by your local rivals.

“United have an experienced team out there. City were missing players, but whoever comes into the team is pure quality. That’s what they have whereas Man Utd seemed all over the place.

“At a big club like Manchester United, you wonder what it must be like for the players sat in the dressing room 4-0 down at half-time.

“It must be bizarre, but then these players are getting used to it as they were 4-0 down at Brentford.

“The manager must be scratching his head with his staff as there was progress in the last four games, but this is a huge step back.”
