Scunthorpe boss Ian Baraclough is hoping to bring in a centre-back on loan ahead of the home clash with Middlesbrough.
David Mirfin has been ruled out for several weeks with a foot injury and Rob Jones is still absent because of a broken hand.
Baraclough said: “I may have to bring a centre-back in. We’ll see where we are with Rob Jones when he visits a specialist this week.
“We have a tight-knit group here and one wrong signing could ruin it. We have to be careful who we bring in and make sure it’s the right one.”
However, youngsters Michael Raynes and Niall Canavan will keep their places at the heart of the defence after an impressive display in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Hull.
Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray has a series of injury concerns ahead of Tuesday’s Championship trip to Scunthorpe.
Central defender Stephen McManus is being assessed after damaging an ankle in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, while midfielder Barry Robson is rated at only 50-50 as he has a tight thigh muscle.
Gary O’Neil remains a doubt for the clash with a groin injury, while keeper Danny Coyne is also struggling with a calf muscle tear.
Julio Arca made a surprise return from a knee problem at the weekend and Mowbray is keeping his fingers crossed that the Argentinian suffered no reaction.
Jonathan Franks (herniated disc), Willo Flood (knee), Rhys Williams (pelvis) and Matt Kilgallon (back) remain on the sidelines.
