Pep Guardiola says Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is “a legend like Thierry Henry” after he scored a hat-trick in their victory over Aston Villa.

The striker’s treble in City’s 6-1 thrashing cemented his place as the league’s all-time overseas top scorer.

He has now scored 177 goals – from 255 league games – to overhaul former Arsenal striker Henry‘s mark of 175 after a clinical performance at Villa Park.

His 12th Premier League treble also made him the outright leading hat-trick scorer in the Premier League, ahead of Alan Shearer.

Goals from Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez with two had put Guardiola‘s side 4-0 up at half-time in a one-sided contest.

The visitors dismantled their hosts to move up to second in the Premier League.

On their victory over Dean Smith’s side, Guardiola told BBC Sport: “We enjoyed it a lot and played well. We did a lot of short passes and everyone was involved, even the defence and so was able to take control of the game.

“We moved the ball quickly so we found the space to up the tempo.

“We score a lot of goals but most important is the way we play and we were fantastic in this.”

On Sergio Aguero, Guardiola added: “We congratulated him in the dressing room. He’s a legend like Thierry Henry so it’s nice to think Sergio was the one to break the record.

“It’s the consistence of Aguero and he’s been doing it over a long long time and that’s when it adds value.

“When someone score goals, it’s nice to be a part of it and we were with him and that’s nice for all of us.”
