Shaqiri slams ‘jealous’ Adam over Liverpool warnings

Xherdan Shaqiri has issued a withering response to criticism from former teammate Charlie Adam.

Shaqiri and Adam spent three years together at Stoke, the last of which culminated in Premier League relegation.

While Shaqiri earned something of a personal promotion for his vain efforts with a move to Liverpool, Adam has fallen so far down the Stoke pecking order that he hasn’t made a single appearance in the Championship.

That has not stopped the midfielder sniping at the Swiss international however, questioning both his attitude and his end product.

Shaqiri has delivered a fine rebuttal to a player who received more red cards than he scored goals in Stoke’s relegation season.

“I think it’s just frustration maybe – or jealousy because I had a good move,” he told the Evening Standard.

“I was surprised that he spoke like this about me but that is sometimes the character of a player.

“I know what he said was totally wrong because at that time I played there – especially when times were hard – I was there and I was scoring a lot of goals.

“I was one of the only ones who helped the team with goals in difficult games and he was that guy who took the red card in league games and missed a penalty.”

Yeah, remember when Charlie Adam enjoyed the greatest ever run of three successive appearances last season?

Shaqiri continued: “I don’t have to prove Charlie Adam or some people that are speaking about me wrong.

“I’m just a player who wants to work and who does my job every day, the same as I always did.

“I know that people know how good I am – most of the people that understand football know that they are wrong.”
