Man Utd left-back Luke Shaw appeals to an official

Luke Shaw is set to have his contract extended at Manchester United ‘regardless of his standing in Erik ten Hag’s squad’, along with four of his teammates.

Shaw has been jettisoned from the starting lineup by new signing Tyrell Malacia and looks set for a watching brief for the majority of the season if Malacia can avoid injury.

But the Manchester Evening News claims United will look to extend Shaw’s deal – which expires in June – no matter how much he’s featured under Ten Hag.

David de Gea, Fred, Diogo Dalot and Marcus Rashford have also entered the last year of their contracts and are set to be handed extensions.

Whether United’s plan is to keep the quintet is besides the point, according to the report, with the club instead desperate not to lose any of them on a free transfer as they believe each of them retains resale value.

United are yet to open negotiations with representatives having focused on recruitment since Ten Hag took the helm, but talks are expected soon.

Diogo Dalot has asserted himself as the first choice right-back at Old Trafford and sources close to the Portugal international claim he is relaxed about his future, while David de Gea has previously said he wants to end his career with the club, though there are doubts over his standing under Ten Hag.

Rashford’s brother and agent, Dwaine Maynard, reportedly met with Paris Saint-Germain officials last month, in what was thought at the time to be a negotiation tactic to put pressure on United to offer the striker a new deal.

They were perhaps not in the strongest position at the time given Rashford’s poor from, but the England international has impressed under Ten Hag, scoring three and assisting two in his last four Premier League games.

Ian Wright’s thoughts on Rashford suggest United should indeed offer him a new deal, with the Arsenal legend claiming he’s looking “f***ing dangerous” again.

Wright said: “I was really pleased for Rashford because – it was the same as the Liverpool game – he’s another one of those players that everything he does is quite defining.

“If he misses that [first goal], it goes to that place of real negativity again. But what I’ve seen from him up until this point, especially with the last two goals he’s scored, is somebody that thinks ‘If I’m going through, I’m scoring’.

“I can’t complain about that because Arsenal went there with the right attitude.

“Looking at Manchester United, in the current climate, you don’t want those players to get confidence.

“But Rashford looks reborn, he’s putting the pot on the fire because he’s ready to cook. In that instance [running through on goal], he looks unstoppable.

“The only thing that is going to stop him is if the pass isn’t good enough, or his touch isn’t good enough.

“Both of the finishes got a little clip off somebody, but he’s getting the luck now. With his pace, he is f**king dangerous.”
