Shearer: Why in the blue hell is Kane taking corners?

Alan Shearer has questioned why Harry Kane takes England’s corners and has compared the tactic to Lewis Hamilton having to change his own tyres.

All six of England’s corners in their opening Euro 2016 draw with Russia were taken by Kane – the Tottenham striker who scored 27 goals in all competitions last season.

With other players such as Adam Lallana and even Wayne Rooney seemingly more suited to the job, Kane’s continued presence on set-pieces is a cause of concern for ex-England captain Shearer.

Writing in the Sun, he said: “He is England’s number one centre-forward and one of our best headers of a ball. So why on earth is Roy Hodgson asking him to take corners? It is like asking Lewis Hamilton to change his own tyres.

“Kane is well within his rights to pull Roy Hodgson to one side in training this week and say, ‘I don’t think I should be taking corners – I want to be in the box getting on the end of them’.

“Why can’t Wayne Rooney or Adam Lallana take them? Let’s be honest, if you are a midfielder playing for England and you have not got the ability to take a corner, you should not be on the pitch.”
