Harvey Elliott can fill the void left by Xherdan Shaqiri at Liverpool amid rumours he will leave this summer, according to former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Shaqiri has been heavily linked with a move to Serie A side Lazio, six years after last playing in Serie A with Inter Milan.

And the Swiss attacker said on Monday that he had informed Liverpool of his desire to leave the club this summer to pursue a move elsewhere.

Gossip: Liverpool and Man City to miss out on targets

“I told Liverpool board I feel ready for a new challenge,” Shaqiri told Corriere dello Sport.

“They accepted my decision and will now consider bids to sell me. Liverpool won’t stop me this summer. The important thing at this moment in my career is to be able to play regularly, but that hasn’t always been the case in the last three seasons.

“I’m only 29 years old, I have played in some of the best Leagues in Europe and I would like to continue being a part of them. I’m not yet thinking about the end of my career, it’s a future I imagine far away. We will see what destiny has in store for me.

“I have no direct contact; my consultant team deals with the market. They inform me when there are clubs interested, you have to ask them for the names.”

And Paul Robinson – who played for Blackburn Rovers, Tottenham and Leeds United in the Premier League – reckons youngster Elliott is capable of filling the gap left by Shaqiri.

Elliott impressed last season while on loan in the Championship at Blackburn and there have been rumours linking him to recently-relegated Sheffield United.

Robinson told Football Insider: “Elliott did brilliantly at Blackburn last year and there is no doubt in my mind that he could take on Shaqiri’s role in that squad.

“I think the lack of funds at Liverpool will lead to a lot of these youngsters being more heavily involved next year. I cannot see Elliott or others in the starting XI on a regular basis but they will definitely come into the squad.

“I have no doubt that Elliott can do the same job as Shaqiri next season.”
